It’s no secret that critics have written off AOL a long time ago. Whether that’s fair or not is debatable, however, one thing that the company gets right is its AOL Instant Messenger (AIM). It is an excellent tool for chatting. And, even though the AOL may seem old-fashioned to some, AIM is fully modern.

Lifestream lets you keep current on what your AIM buddies are doing on other social websites, such as Facebook, Twitter and YouTube. When they post, you are alerted via AOL Instant Messenger in real time, and you can comment on their posts directly from AIM.
If you prefer to instant message over your cell phone, you will be happy to know that the majority of phones are compatible with AOL Instant Messenger. Support for AIM varies by carrier, and it works on WiFi, 3G and EDGE networks. Also, an ad-supported version of the chat client can be downloaded from the iPhone App Store for free.
Free voice and video calls can be made to other AOL Instant Messenger users. Both parties will need a headset (or speakers and microphone) for voice functionality, adding a webcam for video calls. For a small per minute charge, AIM Call Out allows you to call any telephone number right from your main chat window.
Expressions is AIM’s version of chat avatars and wallpapers. To be blunt, they do this well. There are 100s of icons, wallpapers and emoticons. One thing sets AOL Instant Messenger apart is that they have many copyrighted images of celebrities. All are categorized to make them easy to find.
AIM is one of the best messaging clients for anyone who likes to make new friends online. There are tons of chat rooms made by AOL as well as user-created rooms. For better or worse, users can add people to their own buddy list without getting approval from the person they are adding.
Other features include chatting with AIM buddies from your Gmail account, a chat history for each of your contacts, and the power to send SMS text messages to cell phones.
Finally, the new AIM Gallery gives you access to a full range of add-ons. Get Widgets for your site, find an AIM Bot to do tasks for you, explore how AOL Instant Messenger interacts with other services with Mashups, or add new features with modules and plug-ins.
With all of these goodies, the critics can go ahead and keep talking, AIM is proving them wrong and going strong.
