ICQ (a homophonic acronym for “I seek you”) is an online chat client. It is loaded with the features people are looking for, but it’s not without its problems. Complaints about it changing home pages, searches, and being difficult to get rid of have been reported by some users. In addition to these problems, spammers often go after ICQ users. With ICQ you can chat one on one. On top of that you can create your own chat room, chat with people who share common interests, or if you’re bold, you can do something that’s unique: chat with a random stranger. Sending messages to your contacts is done by the standard clicking of their name on your list. There is no limit to the length of messages to online friends, but offline messaging limited to 450 characters.
The user interface looks a bit outdated, but ICQ still works well for connecting with others. For example, a built in spell checking function is a nice touch for those who need it (everybody). And the customizable word filter prevents the display of words you find objectionable.
Like other messaging platforms, ICQ gives users emoticons, built-in games and avatars. One difference that may be confusing at first, is that in the ICQ world, avatars are known as “Devils”. Downloadable skins and the ability to send greeting cards contribute to the general experience.

PC-to-PC telephoning is handled with the ICQphone application. But any voice and video chat require downloading a version of the Real Time Communications software. There is no charge for it, but it adds another step where other chat clients don’t require one.
File transfers that are interrupted can be resumed at a later time. ICQ does not limit the size of transmitted files. You can upload files to a shared directory where your friends can get them, and you can get files from your friends’ shared directories in the same way.
With its faults, it would be fair to say that ICQ isn’t perfect. Yet, it serves its function well enough and certainly has a lot of fans around the globe, and the latest version has taken steps to eliminate some of the previous problems.
