Skype has attracted a lot of attention and a rabid following since it first went online in 2003. Chief among the reasons for its success is that users can make free Skype-to-Skype telephone calls anywhere in the world, the only requirement is a microphone and working speakers, or a headset. Throw a webcam into the mix and you can chat via video, too.

Instant messaging allows you to chat in a text-based format online. it’s better than e-mail for conversations – be notified when someone types your name into a chat – can enable chat history to keep an easily accessible record of every chat you’ve had
With group chat everyone sees what everyone else is typing. Need to chat privately with a group member? Click their name and others won’t see the message. Plus, there’s no need to be concerned about missing any of the conversation when you’re away from the computer. The next time you log in to group chat you can see all of the messages you missed (just don’t click on the “leave chat” button as that will remove you from the group).
The equivalent of group chat for audio discussions is the Skype conference call. You can even combine regular phone lines with Skype users in the same conference call, though regular rates will still apply.
For a bit of fun, there is a nice variety of emoticons. Sure, the basic smiley and angry faces are there, but there’s also cake, coffee, a dancing figure and more to help express how you feel. If you don’t like the default color of your Skype you have the option to change your background color or design. Further customization is possible through the options menu.
Most instant messaging clients set a size limit on the files you can send via their service. Once both parties have been added to each other’s contacts list, files of any size can be sent directly over Skype. While there is no size limit, larger files will take longer to send.
The goodies don’t end there, either. A history tab shows the past several chats, calls, and file transfers. From the contacts tab you can add friends, search for people or start a conference call. A lesser-known, but useful, Skype feature is the ability to easily send funds to your contacts via PayPal.
Skype is looking forward as well. They offer their own mobile service, and you can use Skype on several different mobile devices. The full version works on the iPhone and Windows phones. For other cell phones you will need Skype Lite.
