Yahoo Messenger (YM) has been around in one form or another since 1998. And has, for the most part, kept up with changes in the industry. It is available for Windows and Mac OS X, and has limited functionality for the iPhone.

Most of the messenger’s features revolve around instant text messaging. There are many different options, which are accessible through the preferences menu (located under the Messenger tab). And, if you have a Yahoo e-mail account, you can access chat directly while checking your e-mail.

Customizable avatars, display images, different text fonts and colors, and emoticons help to personalize Yahoo Messenger even further. With all of these features, YM is a good choice for casual and serious users alike.
File transfers between users are limited to 2GB. Admittedly, that’s more than sufficient for those who only send the occasional photo or music file. However, more robust users will need to find an alternative way of sending larger files.
Taking the lead from Skype, Yahoo Messenger now has free PC-to-PC calls (as long as both parties have a updated version that supports it). If your contact isn’t online when you call you can leave a free voice mail. Calls to regular phone lines or cell phones start as low as 1 cent per minute.
Overall, Yahoo Messenger is a capable chat client that offers enough features to keep it interesting.
